about the design process:
My visual art practice has always been very music driven, with images and stories popping up in my head upon hearing a song or album, which demand to be created into something tangible.
When I listened to the first single from this album, ‘Unknown Pretenders', the lyrics immediately evoked a host of surreal and post-apocalyptic imagery in my mind. I could envision a landscape of ruined buildings inhabited by nonsensical imagery – scuttling eyeball cockroaches, levitating fly-headed magicians, and skeleton-faced vintage dancers.
So, I grabbed onto this concept and ran with it.
Alongside this post-apocalyptic surrealism, I wanted to try and capture the grit, energy and punky vivaciousness of these songs and Grinspoon’s frenetic live performances; so, I tied this in through gritty textures and physical DIY punk-style collages.
To me, this mixture of surrealism, post apocalyptic amalgamations, wacky vintage imagery, punk imperfectness and grit was the perfect accompaniment to the diversity of the tracks on this album and the raw energy of Grinspoon’s performances.
